SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE
To evade the unrestrained destruction of the environment in the mountains of Yalijux, Guaxac, Caquipec, Chamá and Sacranix, we began our Sustainable Agriculture program. This program came about in response to rapid soil erosion in the fragile ecosystem of Guatemala's cloud forests, and is being used to better the quality of life for the Mayan Q'eqchi' people who live there.
To achieve these objectives, living barriers have been constructed in zones of the steepest inclinations using shrubs and bushy plants such as lemon tea and bulbous flowers.
Furthermore, we are giving capacitation and instruction to local farmers to better their planting and harvesting methods. Not only do these methods evade further erosion damage, but they also discourage the traditional slash and burn techniques so often employed, usually in May or April, to prepare the land for the sustenance crops of beans and corn.

Our program has had so much success that other NGO's have taken it as an example, and with it we have reached over 1,000 rural farmlands worked by the rural poor men and women in the area. Our greatest success has been to instill the realization that it is better not to burn the fields in preparation for the planting of corn and beans, not only for the conservation of the forests, but also to obtain a consistently higher quality harvest.
