ROKJÁ POMTILÁ

Rokjá Pomtilá is a remote Q'eqchi' community situated on the banks of a blue river in the center of 600 square kilometers of subtropical rainforest. The people here clear land for corn and grow cardamom beneath the forest canopy. You are invited to stay in the home of a Mayan Q'eqchi' family and share in daily life.

THE MAYAN CULTURE

You will stay in a typical Mayan Q'eqchi' home, with wooden walls and a dirt floor, and an open fire inside the home over which the food is cooked. Toilets are pit latrines a short distance from the house, and locals bathe in the river. You will eat typical food prepared by the host mother and sleep in a private space behind a separation wall or curtain, and you will be guided by one of the Q'eqchi' men of the community as you explore the abundant wildlife and learn the local uses of the flora and fauna.

NATURE

This fantastic river-side setting provides a magnificent opportunity to enjoy the fresh, clean air and beautiful forest. This area is home to a number of bird and plant species, including parrot, parakeet, toucan, and guan as well as bromeliads, vines, orchids, palms, tree ferns, and a variety of tropical flowers. You may also get a glimpse at the howler monkeys and jaguars that inhabit this area. Caves, lakes, waterfalls, and the beautiful Ik'bolay river are among the natural features you will see.

ADVENTURE

On your visit, you will have the opportunity to hike the pristine rainforest as you look for birds, mammals and tropical plants, travel the Ik'bolay river in a dug-out canoe, visit the place where the river is reborn from its underground path, and see a magnificent Sacred Cave with its sparkling white formations. You may also choose to hike to a lookout point deep within the forest for an experience you'll not soon forget!
