In the cloud and sub-tropical rainforests of Alta Verapaz, PEQ is working to provide low-impact (or "eco") tourism with the comunities of San Lucas, Chicacnab, and Rokjá Pomtilá. Our tours offer the chance to see the beautiful wildlife of the forests and to learn and live alongside the ancient Mayan Q'eqchi' culture that still prevails. To enter the program, families must promise not to employ slash and burn techniques on the land they use to cultivate beans and corn (which constitutes the sustenance of most campesinos in these forests), and assume ownership of their forest to provide tourists opportunities to learn and observe.

|
In actuality, these regions have been relatively untouched by deforestation, and the inhabitants have realized that it is easier and more sustainable to show their forest to tourists than to destroy it. Together with our agricultural projects, the communities have benefitted greatly and already have begun improving the quality of their lives.
